有名どころをめぐる観光旅行、スケジュールの決められたツアー旅行。
そういう旅ももちろん楽しいけれど、もうちょっと違った旅行がしてみたいという人、多いのではないでしょうか？
もっとディープに外国のことを知りたい！
ふつうの旅行では得られないような体験がしたい！
そんなあなたにオススメしたいのが、海外ボランティアです。
短期だと数日、長期だと数ヶ月の間、外国に滞在して、環境保護や貧困者支援などに取り組みます。
かくいう私も、18歳の時にした、初めての海外一人旅はメキシコでの教育支援ボランティア。ふつうの旅行とは違って社会貢献活動をするので、日本では体験できない学びが多く、その国のこともより深く知ることができました。また、現地の人とふれあいながら滞在することになるので、その国の文化を深く知ることにも。当時のホストファミリーとは、今でも連絡をとっています。
今回は、海外ボランティアの様子をInstagramで発信しながら、野生動物の保護活動を続けるMargarita Samsonova（以下、マルガリータさん）が提案する、海外ボランティアを楽しみきるための5つのステップをご紹介します！
1. 自分の可能性を「想像」しよう
今できること、できそうなことだけを考えて、自分の可能性を狭めるのはやめよう。
マルガリータさんはボランティアをきっかけに動物学を学び始めました。しかし、最初に動物学への関心を持ったとき、それを学んだ先のことは何も考えていなかったと言います。
私には情熱だけはあったの。でも、それを言語化することさえできなかった。
How to find a dream to follow? Not a dream car to have, not a dream vacation but that ultimate life goal? How did people decide that they want to be presidents, singers, policemen? It was always a number one question for me! The only answer I think there is – is trying! Last year I graduated in Zoology and today it scares me that I am still not quite sure what exactly I want to do with my life. I used to work in a bar, selling make up in a shop, worked in a zoo, safari park, in a resque center, was research assistant, worked in the office, was selling shots in clubs, I was a model, writer, presenter, hostes, actor, tour guide, got paid to travel and take pictures, but still dont know what is a dream job for me. But as long as you are moving forward trying new things, jobs, meeting people it is fine (is it?). マルガリータさんは、現在10万人以上のフォロワーをもち、活動を通じて世界中の人たちに行動するきっかけを与えています。こんなことになるなんて、ボランティアに初めて参加した時の彼女自身は想像していなかったでしょう。
私が海外ボランティアに行った時も、英語はそんなに喋れなかったし、海外経験が豊富だったわけでもありません。それでも、「なんか楽しそう！」というくらいの無鉄砲さで飛び込んだ先には、それまで見たことのない世界が広がっていました。
まだ/もう〇〇歳だから。〇〇なんてやったことないから。そんな理由で可能性を狭めてしまうのは、もったいない！
2. とにかく調べよう
どんなボランティアを、どこでしたいのか、調べよう。
まずは受け入れ団体を見つけなければいけません。
重要なのは、「やりたいこと」と「やりたい場所」を決めておくことです。
海外でのボランティアプログラムを紹介しているサイトがいくつもあるので、それを使うと便利でしょう。日本語のものだとNICE、英語のものだとINTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER HQなどがあります。またアフリカに特化したAgape Volunteersや南北アメリカに特化したMaximo Nivelなどもあります。
3. お金のことを考えよう
ボランティアをするのにかかる費用をきちんと調べておきましょう。
ボランティアをする際、多くの場合はお金がかかります。受け入れ団体に支払う宿泊費や食費、ボランティアプログラムを見つけたサイトに支払う仲介手数料などが含まれます。マルガリータさんによると、1日あたり20-30ドルくらいが相場とのこと。
お金に心配がある人でも、料理やパフォーマンスなどの特別なスキルがあれば、それを提供する代わりに交渉できるかもしれません。諦めずに連絡をとってみましょう。
Why pay to volunteer? Sometimes it is hard to believe that you need to pay to work, but maybe what I explain now will shed a light on this topic. Just imagine if volunteering would be free and you can just go and live by the beach and be surrounded by animals…sounds like a dream and probably everyone would just want to leave their "real job" and work for food and accommodation. I always see those videos called "dream job" when they give cute baby animal a bath and that's about it, but volunteering is way more than just cuddling animals and taking pictures (not saying I am not doing it in my downtime😂) long hours at the sun, cleaning, washing, sweeping, making food and cleaning again. Because of those videos and other materials that make working with animals seem easy and cute, volunteering now is becoming super popular. People think that they will make a tremendous difference by going somewhere for 1-2 weeks without any previous experience, but that is not actually true. Staff would spend more time training you during those weeks than actually getting real help from you. Paying a fee would make people think before signing up for volunteer placement and stop just everyone who just wants to take pictures with animals from joining and distracting staff from doing important jobs. When I started 6 years ago volunteering was free, but now demand has risen and unfortunately if you just want to try it out for a few weeks you do have to pay, but there are still a lot of programs that will reduce or cancel the price if you have experience, any special skill or if you are staying longer. If you really want to make a difference then a minimum of 1-2 month is needed. And of course, the magic of the work only starts after 1-2 months in, when you learnt the basics, started to get to know people and your animals and know what you are doing. 4. 辛抱強く、待とう
動物保護や環境保全に最前線で取り組んでいる人たちは、みんな忙しい！
物事がほんとうにゆっくりなの。彼らはモノが限られた、なんにもないところにいて、他に考えなきゃいけないことがたくさんあるのよ。手続きには時間がかかるだろうし、返信を忘れてしまうこともあるかもしれないわ。
マルガリータさん自身も、過去にとても簡素な連絡しか送られてこず、「来てほしくないのかな」と思ったこともあったんだとか。しかし実際に行ってみてわかったのは、受け入れ先の人たちは長いやりとりをする時間さえないほどに、忙しいということ。
相手の作業がゆっくりに見えても、気長に待ってあげることも大切です。
5. 暮らしのなかで責任を果たそう
「ボランティアに行って終わり」。ではもったいない。
海外ボランティアを通して得られた経験は、日本ではできなかった特別なものです。実際に活動をしたあなたにしかわからないことがあります。ボランティアでの経験をもとに、日々の暮らしを見つめなおしてみましょう。
ウミガメの保護活動に携わって、日常のプラスチックの使い方を変えてみる。
貧しい子供たちとの関わりを通して、日常のお金の使い方や人との接し方を考え直してみる。
私自身、メキシコの小さな町で、毎日を精いっぱいに生きる人たちと暮らすなかで、貧困や豊かさについて考えをめぐらせました。そして日本に帰ってから私がおこしたアクションは、家族との接し方を改めるという小さなことでした。
自分ひとりにできることは大したことではないし、私が起こせる変化なんてちっぽけなものかもしれない。でも、そうした一人ひとりの変化が、大きな課題の解決につながっていくのだと信じています。
