    hydrogen bike22a

Greenz has written about hydrogen motorbikes before, and the Iwatani hydrogen bicycle is nothing new – Tokyo-based Iwatani revealed the concept zero-emission model at Kansai International Airport in Osaka back in October – but seeing it up close this week was a gas, so to speak. The company has been allowing the motorized hydrogen fuel cell bicycle to be used on a trial basis at the airport, but Iwatani representatives at the Battery Japan 2010 exhibition in Tokyo this week were still tightlipped about plans to produce it commercially, as they were back in the autumn.

The bike – in development for the past four years under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s (METI) Japan Hydrogen & Fuel Cell (JHFC) Demonstration Project – is powered by a 60-watt hydrogen fuel cell that can actually recharge the back-up lithium-ion battery that it comes with, for a total estimated range of 45 kilometers. The styling is nothing special, but this bicycle is definitely cool from a technological standpoint, and managed to draw a sizable crowd to the Iwatani booth at Battery Japan.

Speaking of exhibitions, please come back later this week for more updates from PV Expo 2010 at Tokyo Big Sight, including a look at portable solar applications.

All you locavores out there may remember last year we visited the colorful and delicious local farmers market in Yoyogi. Well, recently we discovered the white awnings of the farmer’s market at the United Nations University in Tokyo, another treasure trove of local seasonal food. Over forty stalls offered vegetables, fruits, rice, breads and pastries, flowers, and some of the prettiest rock salt I’ve ever seen from varied parts of Japan. Part of a burgeoning farmers market movement known locally as Marche Japon to connect people with their food and its producers, this market between trendy Harajuku and super-bustling Shibuya, bristled with energy and enthusiasm.

Panasonic's eco navi washing machine and sweat detector

    panasonic-eco-navi-washing-machine

Yes. It’s true. Panasonic has developed cutting edge technology that can tell how much sweat and dirt is in your washing. How is this eco? Basically, the washing machine uses a few minutes to detect the mount of dirty clothes in the machine, then decides time and water amount needed to run at an optimum compared with how dirty it is.
