I recently had the opportunity to attend the Shanghai World Expo 2010. In the history of the World Expos, the Shanghai Expo is the largest Expo covering 5.28 square kilometers as well as the most expensive one so far.  In 2008 the Expo was in Zaragoza, Spain and the next one will be in Yeosu, Korea in 2012. (Check out the whole Shanghai World Expo series, Parts 1+!)

I started out on the Puxi Side of the Huangpu River. This side consists of the Urban Planning Best Practices area, Zone E and Zone D. As my interests lie in green buildings and sustainable urban planning I spend most of my time in the Urban Planning area.

One of the first buildings we went into was the Cases Joint Pavilion 3. I thought it was so ridiculous that people would  line up to get their Expo Passport stamped. I did not only find these long passport stamp lines in the Porto Alegre Case, but in many of the Pavilions throughout my three days at the Expo.

I specifically liked the exterior walls of the Cases Joint Pavilion 4.

Next, we waited in our first line for about 30 minutes to enter the Hamburg Case. In Shanghai “Better City-Better Life” Expo Part 5, I will discuss the HafenCity in Hamburg that is currently in development. In Shanghai “Better City-Better Life” Expo Part 6, I will discuss the Hamburg Case as it is another Passive House example, just like my recent article about Japan’s First Passive House. In Shanghai “Better City-Better Life” Expo Part 7, I will discuss that European’s Greenest Capital for 2011 is Hamburg, Germany.

Next, we entered the Alsace Case. I was amazed by the green wall and window set with a waterfall inside. In Shanghai “Better City-Better Life” Expo Part 8, I will explain the benefits of these two building techniques.

Air Tree Madrid Case

Air Tree Madrid Case

The Madrid Case consisted of the Air Tree in front of the Bamboo House. The Air Tree is fitted with a series of electricity-producing mini turbines and a giant fan that helps to cool the temperature inside the tree. The external shape moves with the direction of the sunlight throughout the day. This is a replica of the Vallecas Ecoboulevard technological trees that already exists in Madrid.

The bamboo facade of the Madrid Case filters sunshine and therefore enables better ventilation of the building. Behind the bamboo facade are balconies on each floor which enhance the energy efficiency of building by filtering the intense sunlight. The folding outside shutters provide the ability for a changing appearance as they can be placed in infinite ways. The various levels surround an atrium to facilitate the ventilation and air-conditioning of the interior. The 30 square-meter roof is fitted with photovoltaic panels to generate an annual 1,090 kWh of energy.

We walked through various other city cases and to the end of Zone D were we then took the Ferry to the Pudong Side of the Expo.

Your photos are very beautiful. I like your way to see things from the point of green cities. I have also visited the Expo 2010 Shanghai and written an introduction to the Urban Best Practices Area. For details, please visit my blog http://2010shanghaichina.blogspot.com
